What is end of support?
After 12 years, support for Windows XP ended April 8, 2014. There will be no more security updates or technical support for the Windows XP operating system. It is very important that customers and partners migrate to a modern operating system such as Windows 7 or 10. Customers moving to a modern operating system will benefit from dramatically enhanced security, broad device choice for a mobile workforce, higher user productivity, and a lower total cost of ownership through improved management capabilities.
What does this mean to you?
It means you should take action. After April 8, 2014, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for Windows XP. Security updates patch vulnerabilities that may be exploited by malware and help keep users and their data safer. PCs running Windows XP after April 8, 2014, should not be considered to be protected, and it is important that you migrate to a current supported operating system – such as Windows 7 or 10 – so you can receive regular security updates to protect your computer from malicious attacks.
Will my PC stop working if I don't upgrade?
No. Your machine will continue to function. What you will notice is certain pieces of software will stop working correctly. Most everyday software has already ended XP support and will not be releasing updates, this includes Flashplayer, Chrome, Java, Adobe Reader etc. These have an effect on your web browsing and some sites will not load correctly, if at all, without the proper updates.
Will my machine be able to upgrade?
This is a case by case scenario. Some machines running XP are fully capable of upgrading to a newer version of Windows. Some are not. We can evaluate your machine and help you with the process.
Can I upgrade it myself?
If you have the knowledge, yes. Upgrading from XP to a newer version of Windows requires more than a download or a software disk. Unless you are familiar with the process we recommend bringing your machine to us so we can do it for you.
